I found an article about the relation between the gender, poverty en suicide in Batman, a city in the southern east of Turkey.
The question oft he article is why in Batman the number of suicides is increased while suicide is not a big topic in Turkey. Another question is, why the rate of suicides for womenis much higher than for man while in other countries in the world it ist he other way around. There was a study made by the Dicle University (Diyarbakir, Turkey).
The results show that the main reason for the fact that more women are committing suicide is not that they are living in poverty and that they are not able to handle it. The problem is the patriarchal system in this part of Turkey. The women are often totally contolled by their men and fathers. They have no possibility to make decissions in their lives. Women are on a very low level in the society and they are not allowed to live freely.
The article shows that the combination of the patriarchal system and poverty is the reason why women (the age of the most women is between 15 and 24 years) in Batman are committing suicide.
I decided toread this article because it has a relation to my case. The familie fromm y case comes from southeastern Turkey and they moved to Istanbul. In this part of Turkey the totally control of the women is much higher than in the western parts of Turkey.
In my case the father also tries to control his wife and his daughters but he comes in conflict with the new values of western Turkey.
